How the holy days are counted
A วันพระ (wan phra, or วันธรรมสวนะ) comes four times in every lunar month: the waxing 8th, the waxing 15th (full moon), the waning 8th, and the last day of the waning half. That last one is the waning 15th in a 30-day month and the waning 14th in a 29-day month. Odd months normally have 29 days and even months 30. The exceptions are a year with an extra day, which gives month 7 a 30th day, and the second month 8 of a leap-month year, which has 30.
Dhammayut temples
The Dhammayut order keeps its own calendar, ปักขคณนา, which is calculated differently from the lunar calendar this page uses. A Dhammayut temple's holy day may therefore differ from this page in some months. If you are going to a particular temple, ask that temple. Wikipedia (Thai)
Where the rules come from
- วันธรรมสวนะ · Four วันพระ a month, and the waning 14th in a 29-day month
- Makha Bucha · waxing 15th of month 3; month 4 in a year with a leap month
- Visakha Bucha · waxing 15th of month 6; month 7 in a year with two eighth months
- Asarnha Bucha · waxing 15th of month 8; the second month 8 in a leap-month year
- Khao Phansa (start of Buddhist Lent) · waning 1st of month 8 (the second month 8 in a leap-month year), the day after Asarnha Bucha; not itself a วันพระ
- Ok Phansa (end of Buddhist Lent) · waxing 15th of month 11
- Loy Krathong · waxing 15th of month 12; a festival rather than a Buddhist observance, but it falls on a วันพระ
